Setting up your email program to send and receive email

We have used Microsoft Outlook Express in this example but you can use any email program and the setup process will be identical. We highly recommend the Thunderbird email program, which simple to use, safe, powerful and comes with an excellent spam filter. And it's free.

When you take out one of our virtual servers you are given at least one POP (Post Office Protocol) account, which is where all email sent to you is located.

1. Open Microsoft Outlook Express
and click on Tools > Accounts > Add

Outlook window

2. Enter your Name and Email address

Then you will be presented with a screen for setting up Outlook Express with your email server.

3. Enter your email server details

The Incoming mail server is POP3

The Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server are both mail.yourdomain (eg. mail.bobfisher.com)

Now click on Next to take you to the Mail Logon Screen from here you will be asked for your username and password that we supplied to you when you opened your account with.

Outlook window

This is to authenticate your identity, so that you can send and receive your emails. Make sure you type both your username and password correctly (including uppercase or lowercase letters). Click Finish.

To make your outgoing mail server work you must enter some additional information, on the current screen (Internet Accounts) click "Properties":

Now click the "Servers" tab at the top of the screen and tick the box at the bottom of the screen under "Outgoing Mail Server" that says "My server requires authentification" as shown below:

Click "OK" and then "Close".

You are now ready to use your new email account!
